The past two weeks have been full of visitors with school holidays on and a lot of families from Docker River in town. On Tuesday last week we had Lucy and Mariaa from Gap Youth Centre down here to meet the young people involved in Ngapartji Ngapartji and let them know about what they do down at the Gap. Mariaa Randall showed them some DVDs of her work as a dancer in Sydney as well as some of the breakdance work she’s been doing with young fellas in town to the response of ‘rikina!’ (lookin’ good!).

Lucy started what we plan to be a series of photographic workshops by introducing the group to some basic ideas about composition and showing them how they could work with their photos on the computer. It was a big group for a first workshop with Matilda and Trudy here from Docker and Wirika and Esmerelda Kulitja and Janelle Fossey in town from Mutitjulu, as well as the usual crew from Abbott’s camp – Sadie, Elton and Julie and their families Debra Anderson, Janet Wirri and Doris Abbott! So while some people went out to take photos of the river (did I mention the river was full last week?) the others checked out the deadly mob website where young people have posted up the work they’ve done in communities. Without much guidance they found the link to ngapartji ngapartji and saw the first lessons that were made for the website.

Batesy finally finished editing and subtitling the films which were made in Docker River and has started the task of making DVDs for everyone who participated. Maureen’s film Kungka Kutju Tjituru-Tjituru Ananyi which was shown at Story Wall on the Flynn Church lawns in the Todd Mall last Friday night was selected to be shown at an international conference in Sydney this weekend – OURMedia – NESTROSMedios VI – as part of a presentation about films being made with young people in Central Australia.

Beth arrived from Melbourne yesterday (where she is currently living) and is on her way to Pukatja today with Vince Lamberti to run workshops and build the Ngapartji Ngapartji choir again, in preparation for future touring and performances.

Happy Easter
Dani
