Today Ngapartji Ngapartji headquarters is alive and happy with visitors from Ernabella. Makinti, Nami and Imuna, all of whom have been in the show at some time, are in Alice Springs for the annual APY Lands Teachers’ Conference. This afternoon they have been spending some time with Beth and Alex working on an invitation to go out to anangu to let them know that the Ngapartji Ngapartji production will be coming to the APY Lands in September to play two nights in Ernabella. Our company manager Mariaa Randall also popped in and will be back on deck next week to get things moving on the tour.

The past fortnight’s gone by so fast I can’t believe it’s news time again. So what’s been happening? After having Trevor and Scott here the week before last and myriad meetings about the triumphs, trials and tribulations of the project, last week really launched us back into the day-to-day operations of the work on the ground, forcing us to test the theories we’d discussed against the realities of running a project with such extensive vision from week to week.
What we’ve tried to do between being away on tours and out bush and planning and organising these trips, as well as producing and managing the website and short community films, is to continue to offer a workshop program in town, aimed at young people and their families, especially Pitjantjatjara people living in town camps. This program has attracted and engaged many inspiring artsworkers and participants over time and has established a creative and dynamic space for all of us to work in.

Last week Janet Inyika and myself went to Darwin overnight for the NT Government Research and Innovation Awards presentation dinner. The Ngapartji Ngapartji project was one of three finalists in the McArthur River Mine Indigenous Innovation Award. It was an honour to be amongst such dynamic and accomplished individuals and projects across the Territory in the rare forum where the arts and science sit together.

In incredibly exciting news Minister Garrett and Minister Macklin have written to the Prime Minister regarding the need for an Indigenous Languages Policy and are awaiting his reply. We of course are waiting
too, eager to learn if this might be the beginning of a long-awaited
policy development in this area. Alex met with Minister Garrett last
week to discuss where this matter was sitting and was delighted to hear
things were indeed on the move.

I am back this week from a two-week stint in Pipalyatjara Community, South Australia, which is approximately 700 km south west of Alice Springs, a few kilometres from the tri-state borders of the NT, SA and WA. Doumentary film maker and mentor David Wardell and myself were invited to Pipalyatjara by NPY Women’s Council to run film-making workshops for young people over the school holidays.

There's been a little discussion about shifting focus from creating discreet workshops in town to finding points of community engagement in the myriad events and work that we have before us. This week we mapped out the next 18 months of the project and were excited and overwhelmed at how much we have on our communal plate, including the production of a documentary, upcoming filmmaking workshops in Ernabella in July and the SA/NT tour in September/October. We received funding through the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) to develop a mobile gallery to house and share the images and text produced by project participants throughout the project and started the first of a series of workshops in the newly renovated community building in Abbott's camp. And long-term project participant and established watercolour artist Elton Wirri flew to Melbourne last week to co-present with Company Director Scott Rankin at the Deakin Lectures.

In a faded blue T-shirt and jeans, Trevor Jamieson flashes on to the
computer screen, swatting flies from his face as he welcomes
participants to Ngapartji Ngapartji's online community.
He is framed in a desert scene, the sun beating on his back as he
acknowledges the native landowners upon whose land he stands, flitting
between his indigenous tongue, Pitjantjatjara, and English.
