Wai! Palya!
While bush workshops, ‘memory basket’ production, planning for attendance at another youth learning workshop in Darwin in September, ongoing documentary work and Nyuntu Ngali creative development all tick along here at Ngapartji Ngapartji, the focus of this news posting will be on an issue that sits squarely behind all of these activities - raising public awareness of the status and significance of indigenous languages, of their rapid loss, and of the pressing need to create policy and strategies to promote, preserve, and maintain indigenous languages, as well as ensure they have a respected and valued place in Australian society and life.
As discussed briefly in the previous posting (June), a big part of the ongoing work done here at Ngapartji Ngapartji has been using the high profile created by project arts activity, such as the theatre show, as leverage to push for social change, in this case to lobby for a National Indigenous Language policy. The last month has seen some significant and exciting developments in this area, including Alex taking an incredible collection of over forty letters in support of such a policy to Minister Macklin in Canberra, and consequently receiving word of a commitment to develop an indigenous languages action plan.
Alex recently shared the background of these developments with us at Ngapartji Ngapartji, as well as detailing where all this sits in both the project’s and Big hART’s commitment to social change. It was a fascinating session and worth sharing some of the details….

Apologies for the lateness of a fresh news posting from us here at Ngapartji Ngapartji - this has certainly not been due to no news! Just after the last posting, folk from Ngapartji Ngapartji joined others from BighART, to attend the Sydney Myer Performing Arts Awards in Melbourne - where the organization was honoured with receiving the ‘Group award’. Back in Alice, Batesy and Vanessa have been continuing their tireless work putting together the documentary, heartened by the project being short-listed as part of the JTV Doco initiative. Back from bush music recording workshops in Ernabella in April, Beth went straight on into an inspirational three day ‘Nyuntu Ngali’ creative development ‘happening’ in Adelaide in May with Scott Rankin, Elliat Rich, Trevor Jamieson, Derek Lynch and the team from Windmill. Meanwhile, Alex has been finalizing the timeline for the ‘legacy pack’, recently renamed the 'memory basket' in consultation with the Ernabella ladies, which will go into production soon, but her main focus has been on intensifying the project’s efforts to lobby for a National Indigenous Language Policy. This has included locking in a long-hoped for meeting with Federal politicians in Canberra in June and this is where you can help! More about all these items under subheadings below! |

This month at Ngapartji Ngapartji has been another busy one for all the different ‘arms’ of the project. On the doco front award winning film editor, Vanessa Milton from Sydney has arrived to work with Batesy and they have already completed a promotional trailer! In the youth and learning area, two Abbott’s Camp young people participated in a 4 day youth media workshop with Jane. Meanwhile Beth has been busy planning for more upcoming music recording workshops in Pukatja, and Alex has been dealing with less glamorous and ever-demanding fundraising and admin tasks before she heads to Tassie to check out some other Big hART Projects. However we did all manage to come together for an inspiring brainstorming session with designer Elliatt Rich to discuss what we will leave behind us when the project finishes in 2010.
